JOB DESCRIPTION

Assistant Managing Editor, History & Culture

National Geographic Media – Walt Disney Television

Assistant Managing Editor, History and Culture is skilled at working with a diverse group of contributors to create authentic and inclusive stories about both historical topics and the modern day human condition, reflecting successes as well as global challenges. This editor will be adept at conceiving, assigning, editing and executing content across multiple platforms. The person in this role must be able to motivate editorial team members — both staffers and freelancers — to produce content that is surprising, sensitive and informative on topics from important archaeological discoveries to today’s human rights issues. The editor needs to have broad knowledge of the topic areas at the core of National Geographic, active involvement with sub-editors in the editing and packaging of articles from conception to publication, and strong collaborations with photographers, cartographers and designers at National Geographic and the National Geographic Channel, and with colleagues at the National Geographic Society and The Walt Disney Company at large.

Responsibilities:

  • Helping to lead the History and Culture desk staff and direct content priorities. Work with writers, photo editors, photographers, video producers and the graphics team to plan coverage and approach. Edit editorial content working closely with the Executive Editors, Managing Editor/Digital, Director of Visual and Immersive Experiences, and Features Editor.
  • Deliver rich content across multiple platforms.
  • Editing Stories - Be knowledgeable about current stories involving history and culture. Evaluate interest, storytelling, logic, style, readability, publishing cadence and editorial strategy. Work with writers to improve articles through revision, execution and promotion. Help recruit new talent to produce groundbreaking content. 
  • Strengthening the delivery of enhanced History and Culture content.
  • Be a leader in outreach on projects with other partners, planning and participating in such programs that address important issues and promote the National Geographic mission. 
  • Conceiving stories and publishing content to drive readership and gain subscribers.

Requirements:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Journalism, Communication, or other relevant focus.
  • Minimum of 10 years’ journalism experience.
  • Experience leading and building a team.
  • Skilled at communicating and motivating colleagues in a clear and positive way to produce relevant and important content.
